HookWise

Compatibility

HookWise runs on macOS, Windows and Linux (Ubuntu). Check the specs below before you buy, or simply try it with the 7-day trial.

System requirements

Measured on release builds. Any supported computer can render; a GPU with a hardware video encoder makes exports faster and keeps the laptop cool.

The transcription model is downloaded on first launch (Small, 488 MB). 4K editing and export: 16 GB of memory recommended.

Supported architectures

macOS: a universal build for Apple Silicon (M1 or later) and 64-bit Intel. Windows and Linux: x86_64 only (64-bit Intel or AMD). There is no Windows ARM or Linux ARM64 build yet, and 32-bit systems are not supported.

Hardware encoders

Rendering uses a hardware encoder when one is available: the Apple Silicon media engine or VideoToolbox on macOS, and NVIDIA NVENC, Intel Quick Sync or AMD AMF on Windows. Without a hardware encoder rendering still works with a software encoder, but it is slower and uses the full CPU.

Linux notes

A .deb package is available for Ubuntu 22.04 and 24.04 or later. NVENC needs the proprietary NVIDIA driver, and Quick Sync needs the intel-media-va-driver package.

Internet needs

An internet connection is needed on first launch to download a transcription model (148 to 1533 MB depending on the model), for sign-in and periodic license checks, and for features that are online by nature: importing from links, Google Drive and Gemini AI. Transcription, editing and rendering run fully offline.

Download size

The macOS installer is about 145 MB (about 272 MB installed). Transcription models download separately: Base 141 MB, Small 465 MB (recommended), Medium 1.4 GB.
